Seeking knowledge is one of the noblest journeys a believer can embark upon, but it’s not always easy. The path of ‘ilm is filled with moments of joy and understanding, but also days of fatigue, struggle, and slow progress.
And that’s exactly why ṣabr, atience, is the companion of every true student of knowledge.
Allāh ﷻ tells us:
“And be patient, for indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.”
(Surah Hūd, 11:115)
The journey of learning, whether it’s memorizing Qur’an, mastering Arabic grammar, or understanding the Sunnah, requires consistency and a heart anchored in patience. Knowledge isn’t gained overnight; it’s gathered slowly, like drops of rain that eventually fill a river.
The Nature of True Learning
The scholars of old spent years, sometimes decades, seeking knowledge. They would travel across deserts and seas to hear a single hadith or to study under a particular teacher. Their hunger for knowledge was deep, but so was their patience.
Imām ash-Shāfi‘ī رحمه الله said:
“Knowledge cannot be gained except with six things: intelligence, desire, patience, sustenance, guidance of a teacher, and long time.”
Notice that patience and time are both mentioned, because even with talent or passion, without patience, a student will quickly burn out.
Today, with everything available at our fingertips, online lessons, digital books, apps, it’s easy to think knowledge should come fast. But the nature of ‘ilm hasn’t changed. What changes is how sincerely and patiently you approach it.
The Qur’an’s Emphasis on Patience
Allāh constantly mentions ṣabr as a mark of the believers, especially those who seek to learn and act upon His words.
“And We made from among them leaders, guiding by Our command, when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.”
(Surah As-Sajdah, 32:24)
Leadership in knowledge, being among those who guide others, also doesn’t come by talent or memory alone, but through patience and certainty. The two qualities go hand in hand: patience in the process, and certainty in Allāh’s promise.
The Prophet ﷺ as a Model of Patience
Our beloved Prophet ﷺ is the best example of patience in the pursuit and teaching of knowledge. He endured mockery, rejection, and hardship, yet never wavered in spreading the message of truth. His patience was praiseworthy and worthy of emulation.
He said:
“Whoever remains patient, Allāh will make him patient; and no one is given a gift better and more comprehensive than patience.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 1469)
Every student of knowledge must carry this mindset. The more you remain patient during moments of struggle, the more Allāh strengthens you.
Dealing with Frustration and Slow Progress
There will be days when nothing seems to stick, when your Arabic lessons feel confusing, when your memorization slips, or when you feel like giving up. But remember: slow progress is still progress.
Ibn al-Jawzī رحمه الله said:
“If the learner doesn’t persevere through the first hardships, he will never reach the sweetness of knowledge.”
Knowledge, like a seed, needs time to grow. Water it daily with effort, sunlight it with sincerity, and guard it with patience. Over time, you’ll begin to see its fruits, clarity in understanding, peace in your heart, and closeness to Allāh.
Perseverance: The Steadfast Heart
Patience is about enduring difficulties, but perseverance (istiqāmah) is about staying consistent even when it’s easy to stop. It’s the ability to keep going, little by little, without giving up.
Allāh ﷻ commands:
“So remain steadfast as you have been commanded.”
(Surah Hūd, 11:112)
Knowledge isn’t built by bursts of energy, but by small, consistent steps.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The most beloved of deeds to Allāh are those that are consistent, even if they are few.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6464)
If you can dedicate even fifteen minutes daily to studying Arabic, revising your Qur’an, or reading a beneficial book, do it sincerely, and keep doing it. That consistency, maintained for Allāh’s sake, will take you further than you imagine.
The Reward of Patient Learning
The student who stays patient in their studies isn’t just gaining knowledge; they’re earning reward with every effort. Every difficulty, every time they push through confusion or tiredness, is counted with Allāh.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When Allāh loves a people, He tests them. Whoever is patient has the reward of patience, and whoever is impatient has the burden of impatience.”
(Musnad Ahmad, 23122)
When you find learning difficult, don’t see it as a setback, see it as a sign that Allāh is refining your sincerity and strengthening your character. Each moment of patience is recorded in your scale of good deeds.
The Role of Du‘ā in Perseverance
One of the most powerful ways to maintain patience is through du‘ā. Never underestimate asking Allāh for help in your learning. The scholars used to begin their lessons with supplications like:
“O Allāh, make knowledge beloved to us and beautify it in our hearts. Make us among those who act upon it, not those who turn away.”
You can make du‘ā in your own words too:
“O Allāh, grant me patience in seeking knowledge. Make it easy for me, and bless my time and understanding.”
Allāh loves when His servant turns to Him sincerely, and He will ease your path in ways you don’t expect.
